Can Kratom Trees Be Grown From Seed?

Kratom trees are a tropical evergreen that is native to Southeast Asia and is now listed a legal herb in Thailand.

They can be grown from seed but the germination rate is very low, somewhere between 10% and 20%.

The best way to grow a kratom tree (Mitragyna speciosa) is taking a cutting from the original tree and wait for it to grow roots.

A kratom plant needs plenty of light, water, and good drainage. If you live in a colder climate and plan on growing kratom plants indoors, they also need to be kept at room temperature (or warmer).

Instead of trying to grow kratom from seed, you can use root cuttings or buy starter plants from nurseries or specialty stores. This will save you a lot of time if you don’t want to go through the process of planting seeds yourself to see if they grow.

We grew our first kratom, the red variety from saplings we got from a neighbour.

You should water your starter plant with a half cup of distilled water every day. One teaspoon of salt can be added to the water if you want the plant to grow faster. This trick also works on coconut plants.

What are the Uses of Kratom?

The leaves of a kratom tree are used as a leafy green vegetable, mostly in the form of tea, chewed or ground into a powder. It has both an opioid and stimulant type effects.

Kratom has also been used in traditional Asian medicine for centuries and it has been used to help people with anxiety, depression, and opioid addiction. The leaves contain antioxidants, which prevent cellular damage and promote healing. They also have pain-relieving properties.

Kratom trees are not related to coffee plants or the coca plant but they do share some similarities with them. They grow best in places where there is a lot of rainfall, they can reach heights up to 15m tall and the plant is used as a stimulant to experience vigour and euphoria.

There are two main types of Kratom trees, Red Vein Kratom and White Vein Kratom. When consumed, the red vein variety is more stimulating while the white vein variety is more relaxing.

Domestic vs Wild Kratom – What’s The Difference?

Wild kratom is the original and most potent form of the plant. It has been found in remote regions of Southeast Asia such as Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia.

Domesticated kratom is a hybridized version of the plant that has been cultivated in many other parts of the world.

How To Grow Kratom Seeds At Home – A Four Step Guide

Growing kratom plants at home is a rewarding experience. It is not difficult to grow your own plants if you are first lucky enough to germinate the seeds. However, if you grow from seed or from a starter plant, it is possible and can be done in your own house, backyard or even on a windowsill if the conditions are right.

Growing kratoms from seeds at home is the most economical way of getting started with this plant. This method will provide you with the best quality kratoms as well as an opportunity to learn more about how these plants grow and what conditions work best for them. These small seeds come in pods and resemble a corona close up.

The following are the steps on how to germinate your kratom seeds and what to expect when they sprout.

  1. Before you do anything, decide which kind of container you will use for growing your plants in. If you are using a container, ensure that it has drainage holes.
  2. Next sterilise your work area so that germination can occur in an environment free of any type of pest or disease that might contaminate these small seeds later on in life.
  3. Now choose a good growing medium with peat moss, vermiculture and organic material to give your seeds the best chance of germination. Sand or perlite would also make a welcome addition to the soil mix to aid drainage.
  4. Plant 5 to 10 seeds in a container and cover with an inch of soil. Water daily, cover the container to create a hot and humid microclimate and keep in a warm place with plenty of sun or artificial light.
