Growing Coriander Seeds Basics & Tips to Ensure Maximum Yields

When growing coriander seeds at home, you don’t need a lot of space, they will thrive in pots!

Coriander also known as cilantro and dhania is a herb that is used in a wide variety of dishes. It has a flavour similar to parsley and is often used as an ingredient in soups, salads, and many Thai recipes.

This presentation will provide the basics of growing coriander seeds, planting and tips to ensure maximum yields. We will also discuss coriander seeds benefits for health and how to use this medicinal herb when cooking.

How to Prepare the Soil and Coriander Seeds for Planting

Soil preparation is necessary before planting cilantro seeds. A sandy, well-draining soil is preferable and needs to be amended and fertilised in order for it to be healthy enough for the plants to grow.

Some of the most common amendments are vermicompost, peat moss, and perlite.

Coriander seeds should be rolled to break them in two, then soaked in water for 12 hours before planting.

Plant coriander seeds in pots and move them to a sunny area that receives at least 3-4 hours of sunlight a day. The seeds should be planted at a depth of no more than 1/2 inch. They should be watered once and not again until after they have germinated, which can take anywhere between 3 to 7 days. Instead of watering, all that is needed is a light spray twice daily so the soil does not dry out.

The plants will grow to around 2 feet tall and will produce flowers and seeds over a long period of time.

Harvesting Coriander Seeds

You can start harvesting your coriander plants when they reach 6 inches tall. The plant will react favourably to pruning.

Coriander is rich in antioxidants, minerals and vitamins that are essential for good health. It has been used for centuries to flavour foods such as curries and marinades, but it is also an important ingredient in the kitchen. Coriander seeds can be used to make bread , pasta, and other baked goods.

How to Plant Dhania Seeds Indoors or Outdoors & When to Plant Them

In order to plant coriander seeds, it must be done indoors or outdoors depending on the season. In Thailand, coriander seeds are usually planted outdoors after the rainy season has concluded. The best time to plant coriander seeds outdoors in Thailand is between September and November when they will have plenty of sunlight and water to grow successfully.

In colder climates, you can start growing coriander seeds indoors anytime between March and May when the weather starts getting warmer.

Harvesting Your Seeds in The Fall and Storing Them for Next Year’s Sowing

To harvest your cilantro seed crops start by cutting off the top of the plant with a sharp knife, or by pulling up the entire plant. Once you have harvested all of your cilantro plants, you need to let them dry out in a cool place for at least two weeks before proceeding to storage.

Once they are fully dried out, store them in a cool, dry place until springtime. Make sure that they are stored in an airtight container like a jar or plastic baggie so that they stay fresh!
