What is WWOOF?
WWOOF is a program that exchanges volunteer work in permaculture, organic farming, culture, and valuable life skills. This program provides volunteers with the opportunity to live, work, and play on a variety of organic, permaculture, sustainable living properties in Thailand.
As part of the WWOOF program, volunteers (WWOOFers) help out on the project 4-5 hours per day, and in return, hosts provide them with food and accommodations.
Volunteer opportunities are available through WWOOF organisations, which pair volunteers with organic permaculture farms, projects, or smallholdings in the Kingdom looking for help.
Thailand’s traditions, culture, and people provide you with a chance to experience a different way of life while giving back to the local community.
As a guest, you are expected to assist your host with a variety of daily activities as well as participate in them as much as possible.
A full day’s food and accommodation are exchanged for 4-5 hours of help in most countries including Thailand.
Many tasks may be assigned to you, including sowing seeds, composting, gardening, tree and vegetable planting, cutting wood, weeding, harvesting, packing, milking, feeding, fencing, mud-brick making, wine making, chocolate making, cheese making and bread making, and much more.
In many cases, volunteers say they like giving back to the country in which they are traveling.
How Long Can You WWOOF?
It is up to you and your host to negotiate the length of your stay. There are some WWOOF visits that are as short as two or three days and some that are as long as six months. The majority of WWOOF visits last between one and two weeks.
There is one free position every WWOOF host must offer, but if this position is full, some hosts may charge an additional fee to take on extra volunteers.
Volunteering and cultural exchange aren’t the only things some hosts offer. There are some schools that offer classes in yoga, meditation, permaculture, Thai massage, Thai fruit carving, herbs and herb processing, natural building, aquaculture, traditional medicine, Thai cooking, chocolate making, Thai music and art; additional fees may be charged for these services.
Usually, the fee is small and stated up front to offset the cost. For an example, in a rescue centre for elephants, the fee may go toward rehabilitation and feeding.
