Katae and I recently hit the milestone of seven years wedded bliss. To celebrate our wedding anniversary, we decided to head to our favourite resort, The Royal Cliff Hotel in Pattaya, Thailand.
We last visited The Royal Cliff over Christmas 2020, so we were looking forward to seeing the changes that they had planned. The main transformation being the infinity pool. We viewed the plans and drawings back then. That was one thing but seeing and jumping in the new ‘Infini’ pool is something else!
The original infinity pool used to be my favourite place to swim early in the morning before breakfast. Swimming along the pools edge with unrestricted views over the ocean was a great way to start any day. That was until The Royal Cliff built another infinity pool partially above it.
The two-story infinity pool’s upper pools edge runs its entire length, bordering the edge of the resort and the Gulf of Siam below. A raised pool bar and deck shields the last remaining part of the pool where your swimming experience takes on a whole new level of ‘wow’.
Three sides of the pool as well at the bottom are made of glass giving you a unique experience and views in all directions when swimming below the surface. You won’t know whether you’re floating or flying! Wear swimming goggles for the full sensory experience!
Pool side there are ample decks, beds, and chairs to lounge around on and sip a cocktail or two.
With the current, ongoing, two weeks to flatten the curve situation we pretty much had the pool to ourselves. So, if you are looking for a unique experience with lots of Instagramable photo opportunities, this is definitely the place to be.
Where to Stay
We stayed in a Mini-Suite Plus with Sea Views. The ninth-floor suite is well proportioned with a light and open feel. A selection of fresh fruit is provided and as the hotel knew it was our anniversary in addition, they dress our room out and left us a card and a delicious chocolate cake. A very nice touch; )
For those who like to ‘Netflix and chill’, the hotel’s TV system now incorporates the streaming service into their entertainment offering.
We got a 40% discount on the stay with additional money off deal on all meals by booking directly with the Thai government’s stimulus campaign – Rao Tiew Duay Gun (We Travel Together).
Where to Eat
Breakfast is a buffet affair in Panarama. There is plenty of well-presented food here for everyone, every taste and dietary requirement is catered for.
Late in the afternoon we walked along the private beach and then headed back to the Royal Cliff Beach Terrace to take advantage of cocktail hour and watch a magnificent sun set over the gulf.
After the sun went down, we headed back down to the ocean side restaurant called Breezeo. Happy hour had just started here so we continued to indulge in several more cocktail creations. Some shaken, some stirred, all delicious!
The food offering ranges from fresh seafood to Asian fusion. As it was Friday, and we all know Friday is fish night, I opted for the very British fish and chips. If I recall correctly Katae had beef satay and prawns in white wine sauce. Servings are generous and dining was accompanied with live music.
For Saturday night we booked an outdoor table on a little balcony at the Marahani Indian Restaurant. Katae had three separate dished that included a wonderful rogan josh and prawns. I took on a set meal which consisted of pretty much everything with additional beer and a traditional lassie. The set meal won!
Where to Go and What to Do
Pattaya is conveniently located for a break from Bangkok or for many of the local attractions including a number of the world’s best golf courses, water parks and tropical gardens.
We came to relax and were happy to stay in the resort, walk around the grounds identifying trees and flowers. We even spotted a cocoa tree growing happily we gifted to the hotel owners a couple of years ago.
Beside eating too much, drinking too much, swimming and walking we dropped into the ultimate relax mode and enjoyed an afternoon sauna, jacuzzi, body scrub and massage together at the Royal Wing Spa.
Fat, happy and relaxed. A perfect weekend away.
