Khao Tom Gai

Today I’ll be showing how to cook Thai chicken rice soup or as Thai people call it Khao Tom Gai.

It’s easy to cook and provides lots of good, healthy benefits for your body. The ingredients are very easy to find, you can just use what you have got available in your fridge. Below in the picture of all I have got for cooking but you can change it up anyway you want, get creative in your kitchen, no need to be the same same… make it different! 🙂 So let’s start. —>>>

Ingredients for Khao Tom Gai

  • Chicken breasts
  • Salt
  • Black pepper
  • Pumpkin
  • Carrot
  • Mushroom
  • Celery
  • Coriander
  • Spring onion
  • Garlic
  • Steamed rice

  • The last ingredient that can be seen at the top of my picture, I don’t actually know the its name. That is weird, I know right! How can I buy it even if I don’t know its name? How? Easy when I go to the local market, I see it and buy it! Next time I’ll ask what it is called and update this recipe. Please remind me in the comments below! 55

How to Prepare…

  1. First, I wash and clean all the vegetables and cut them up
  2. Cut or slice the chicken after it has been cleaned
  3. Chop the garlic and add the paste in to the heated oil in a small pan. Quickly stir the garlic until it smell nice and turns a golden colour
  4. Add water into a big pot or pan and when it’s nearly boiling add the chicken, salt and black pepper
  5. Next add carrots and pumpkin
  6. Add mushroom
  7. When all the vegetables are starting to go soft, then add the celery, coriander and spring onion
  8. Now it’s ready to serve and garnish with a little extra ginger and coriander to taste

Thai Cooking Tips

  • I don’t add streamed rice into the soup pot!! Why? Because it’s going to be kept separate as dry rice not a rice soup!! If you want to save your Khao Tom Gai for another day, you can separate the soup and the rice. So keep the rice and soup separate and then later, when you want to eat it, just put it together, heat it up and serve hot.
  • If you like hot and a little bit spicy, just add some extra fresh ginger, it’s so good for your blood!
  • I always stir a little extra garlic into the soup to make it smell nice and taste of garlic.

I hope you try to cook and eat Khao Tom Gai for your dinner because it yummy! Arroy mak mak!
